Wednesday at the Montvale Library

The next day the wind had diminished and the sky was ashen grey. It coincided with Gavin’s mood as he made his way toward the New Jersey border. He was a man on a mission. Even though he had asked Kay to facilitate the meeting between Peggy and Paul, he decided to give it one last try to take things into his own hands. He knew from researching on the Internet that Peggy was an employee at the Montvale Library.

He looked at his watch, it was 11 AM. He had just brought his brother Paul to the dialysis center and would have enough time to visit the library and return. He parked his car, moving quickly toward the front door.

“Hello, again.” It was Norman. Gavin recognized him immediately. How could he forget that comb-over. Norman was holding a small bouquet of flowers.

“Do I know you?” Gavin pretended.

“Well, not really. But I saw you yesterday in the diner with Kay.”

“Oh yes, yes. That’s right. I thought you looked familiar. I wish I could talk, but I’m in a hurry. Excuse me.” Gavin disappeared into the building.

Norman took his time. He wanted to see Gloria to mend fences but was incredibly nervous. There was the possibility that he would be rebuffed and made a fool of in front of her colleagues and patrons. He decided she was worth the risk and entered the library. There she was at the circulation desk speaking with Gavin. Norman couldn’t hear what they were talking about while he stood behind a display case out of vision.

“Is Peggy here this morning?” Gavin asked.

“No, Peggy doesn’t work on Wednesdays. It’s her day off.” Gloria’s interest was aroused why a tall, handsome sixty-something man would be calling on Peggy.

“Do you want to leave a message for her? Who should I say called for her?”

Gavin wasn’t biting. He lived in small towns long enough to know how rumors spread like butter on warm toast.

“OK, I’ll stop by tomorrow then. Thank you.”

Gloria went over to a colleague as Gavin walked out. “He’s looking for Peggy,” she said in a low voice. “Nice looking guy. Wish he was looking for me.”

A queasy feeling crept over Norman while he waited for his courage to emerge. There she was, Gloria, a perfectly nice lady, attractive enough, maybe she would respond kindly. He moved from behind the display case straight toward the front desk with a death grip around the bouquet of flowers.

“Gloria.” He said in a low voice.

She turned around with a look of disbelief. “Norman?”

“Gloria, these are for you. Can we talk?”

Gloria told her colleague that she would be away for a few minutes. This was an encouraging sign for Norman. They walked outside to the parking area. She pulled the collar of her sweater around her neck to shield from the breeze.

“These are for you,” he repeated, handing the flowers to her. “Who was that man you were talking to?” Leave it to Norman to be so transparent.

“How am I supposed to know.
